Bogeyman 101
Bogeys of the Arctic Circle
Picture yourself here...the Arctic Circle...looking at the Northern Lights. But that's not all you'll see.
There's the string monster, a creature that will punish you if you don't do your chores and instead, play string games. There's the Mahaha, a skinny creature, blue in color and ice cold to the touch. He always laughs and giggles, but if you see him, he'll tickle you to death.
You have to be careful to be safe. That's why, if you think you see a rockfish, don't creep closer to spear it. That scaley green skin might not be a rockfish, it might be a qallupulliat instead!

Bogeyman #2
The
Qallupulliat
What do you think of sisters that do everything together?
Sisters who play, swim, hunt and eat together? Actually, you don’t want to know
them. They are the qallupulliat sisters and they hunt children. Their eyes are as
big as saucers and their skin is a slimy green. Arctic children learn to stay
away from old ice, because that’s where the sisters like to hide.

Click, Clack, Boo! A Tricky Treat
by Doreen Cronin
IL by Betsy Lewin
Halloween is a terrifying time for Farmer Brown, whose
intellectual score comes in lower than any of the animals on his farm. When the
farm animals party, each noise brings forth a nightmarish idea as to what’s
making the “crunches, creaks, taps, and quackles. Quackle? Even Farmer Brown
knows there’s something odd going on. Once again, Doreen Cronin uses the power
of words (as seen in the sign pinned to the barn) to show that Farmer Brown’s
animals are smarter than he.
PS I left this library book outside and it rained. But that’s
okay. I wanted to buy it anyway.

Here is my first bogeyman (that will appear in Bogeyman 101: A Survival Guide, pub date, August)
Let's start with the troll. Usually found in Scandinavia, he's also made his way to Northern Europe.
He's like a force of Nature, and equally as unpredictable. If a troll is struck by a single beam of sunlight, he'll turn to stone. If he can manage to stay out of the sun, he'll turn into a tree in his old age.
